Ruíz, Antonio. Oil on canvas in Galería de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City, 1939.
This painting, by Artist Antonio Ruiz, named “El sueño de la Malinche“, which translates into “The Dream of Malinche”. This painting shows Malinche lying in bed, with her entire body serving as the solid land underneath the Mexican community and church.
This image evokes certain female earth gods known to the Aztecs, and it sustains the metaphor of the Mexican nation having been built upon the “ground” laid by Malinche’s actions. The lightning above Malinche’s head suggests her dream may not be peaceful and she is worried.
If Malinche moves in any way, the Mexican community resting upon her blanket would be changed dramatically. The artist believes’ Malinche to be responsible for guiding and helping the Mexican community. The canvas painting uses earth tones, which is separated to distinctively show the cities on a mountain, with has the church on the top of the mountain. The church at the highest peak allows it to overlook any enemies approaching and taking care of it‘s people.
I believe this painting best represented Malinche’s vision and dedication to the Mexican communities. It is a simple painting, not colorful, but represents a strong belief in the positive impact Malinche had on the Mexican communities. There are two different opinions about Malinches’ life, visions and accomplishments. On the many articles that I have read about Malinche, I believed she used her position with Cortes to help the Mexican communities build a stronger and productive community.
So when Artist Antonio Ruiz painted this in 1939, did he see the visions of Malinche? Ruiz belived in Malinche and her visions showing how troubled she was with the Mexican communities. Malinche was there to protect the communities, but if she didn’t carefully plan out her strategies, she could have easily caused turmoil.
